      How to read the tide

      • High & low times are when the water turns. Most US coasts see two highs and two lows a day; the Gulf often sees one.
      • Heights are feet above MLLW, the average low. 0.0 ft is a normal low; negative numbers mean an unusually low tide — best for tide pools and clamming.
      • Spring tides (new & full moon) are bigger; neap tides (quarter moons) are smaller.
      • Best windows on each station page: beach and tide pools around a daylight low, fishing around the turn, boating around the higher high.
      • Predictions are astronomical. Wind, pressure and storm surge move the real level — check the observed reading where a sensor exists.
